Ham Sandwich…. why Reimer loved it?

Today is exactly 3 months since Reimer started big school.  So far, he’s enjoying it and loving every single day of it.  There was never a tantrum moment with him when going to school which is like a battle half won.

Since Reimer started big school, I have not been preparing lunches for him as he get his lunch in school for free, which I find it the icing on the cake.  Convenience and money wise comes to mind.  The Scottish Government had implemented free school lunches for Primary 1 – Primary 3 pupils since January 2015, in order to help boost the health and welfare of school kids.  Although for his morning break, I still do prepare a small snack for him such as a packet of biscuit and a couple of fruits.

Going back to Reimer’s First Day in Big School, even though they’re only there for 3 hours, but they were still given packed lunches to take away.   He had chosen Ham Sandwhich that time and that’s how his obsession of ham sandwich started… However, as the days go by, he seemed to always choose ham sandwich for his lunch at school despite of the other options available, even hot meals which would have been much better for him as well.   This came to my attention because every time I collect Reimer up from school, I had this habit of asking him what he’s been up to in school, what activities they do and lastly, what he had for lunch.  To my surprise, I kept getting the same answer, that he had ham sandwich for lunch and that was since Day 1.  I can just utter in disbelief…

Ham Sandwich AGAIN ????

What is in a ham sandwich and why he loved it so much?

According to Wikipedia, Ham Sandwich is one of the earliest recorded close face sandwiches.  In fact, by 1850, there were at least 70 London street vendors who offered it.  The British Sandwich Association said that the ham sandwich is the most sold sandwich in the UK, and that was based on the survey which was conducted in 2001.  It came out that ham is the best filling behind cheese.

It’s so interesting to know these information, isn’t it?

As far as I know, Ham Sandwich is so quick and easy to make with very little ingredients needed for it, and yet it’s actually the most popular one and the best-loved too.

In all fairness, their packed lunches consists of a sandwich, packet of biscuit, fruit juice and fruit which is a variety of healthy food too and I’m not in any way complaining whatsoever.  As long as he’s enjoying what he’s eating and it filled up his little tummy then I’m absolutely fine with it.  However, out of my curiosity, I brought up this topic as well during his school’s Parent’s Night.  His Teacher expressed that she’s also hoping that one day Reimer will pick a different meal from the menu next time she’s going to ask him what he wants for lunch for the day.

Nonetheless, it’s still kept me thinking and wondering why Reimer loved it to bits, considering there’s a lot of meal options for them at school lunch which he would have probably liked as well if he only tried some of those options.

Is it because he can recognize what’s in it?

Or is it solely his taste preference?

Or has it become his comfort food whilst in school?

Probably yes to all of the above and it’s so apparent I suppose!

Reimer + Ham Sandwich = Happy Little Man

Does your little ones love ham sandwich too?

  • We still love ham sandwiches know! They’re the best 🙂

I was never a sandwich eater until I became pregnant with my first and for some reason I craved them morning noon and night. Ham! Now I can take it or leave it, definitely not my first choice for lunch option. But for your son, I would be thankful it’s something healthy and filling. 🙂 As for my kids food choice…I am a big breakfast eater and cook something hot nearly every day. My youngest daughter who is 4 recently decided she wanted cold cereal, which is usually only in the pantry for “emergency,” every single day! She choses it over my eggs, over waffles, over homemade carrot cake jam on toast that I made today! I am actually a bit offended by it 😉 But at least they’re eating, right? #coolmumclub

It can be offensive and hurtful sometimes when they choose to eat crap food rather than our home cooked ones, isn’t it? But as what you said, at least, they’re eating, that’s the main thing.

  • Ha ha, kids are so funny aren’t they? Our three year old asks EVERY day for a jam sandwhich for lunch. Not the healthiest is it?! I’m encouraging her to have other things, obviously, but that is always what she wants! I’m sure he’ll find something more tempting soon…like chips 😉 x MMT #coolmumclub PS Thanks for linking up hun x

It’s funny though coz at home, ham sandwich is probably not his first choice, but in school it is… I don’t understand, lol

  • Natalie Crossan

I do love a good ham sandwich x

  • Awww happy little man is what counts!! It’s brilliant he’s found something he likes so much, if he decided he didn’t like any of it, then you’d be in a pickle! Fingers crossed, one day he tried something else, you’ll have to write a post about it when he does xx

Yes, good suggestion! Hopefully soon as I can’t wait to write a post about it when he’s in primary 6 already, lol

  • I have a sudden craving for a ham sandwich now! With my little one it’s egg sandwiches. All day. Only occasionally alternated with jammie dodgers should they be made available to her Hmmmf. :0) #coolmumclub

It’s funny how they always prefer the same sort of food… unlike us adults, we prefer variety or a little bit of everything.

  • I remember as a child I would only ever eat cheese sandwiches for lunch regardless of all the other options. I think with young children, once they find something they like, they are happy and don’t really feel the need to try other things. I’m sure over time he will branch out a little!

I noticed it too, when they like a particular food, they find it as their comfort food… hopefully, he would try something else soon.

  • My son is the same, he never tires of a ham sandwich! Thanks for linking up to #justanotherlinky xx

awww so Reimer is not alone! I think they just want to eat what they’re familiar with, isn’t it?

  • My little girl 10m and is now fasting sandwiches, she does love a ham one. Me included. At least you see the positives that your little one is eating well and food he enjoys. I know parents who kick up a fuss if there child has the same lunch, but it’s what they want and what makes them happy. Lovely little read 🙂 #bestandworst

awww that sounds so cute! I kept encouraging him to try other meals, kept reading him their lunch menu but still no luck, he still kept choosing the packed sandwiches. It doesn’t bother me at all as he’s eating variety for his dinner anyway.

  • I love sandwiches sometime I would rather have a sandwich for my dinner than a cooked meal as there is so much choice. Ham sandwiches are a favourite of mine too!!!

    • ReimerandRuby

I love sandwich for my lunch, not necessarily for dinner… however, each of us have different taste preference, isn’t it?

  • Aww bless him!! Can’t blame him though I love a ham sandwich 🙂 I wonder if he associates it with school? Lovely to read that he enjoys going to big boy school! Thanks for linking up to the #bestandworst lovely X

    • ReimerandRuby

I think he associate it with school because on weekends, he’s not asking for ham sandwich at all… he eats what’s on his plate anyway.

  • Mine will only have a jam sandwich but he’s is at the age where he is refusing to try anything new. So I let him be, better to let him choose and then dinner is a time for experimenting. Me personally, I love ham sandwiches! I guess that’s just a preference. Thanks for linking up with #abitofeverything

    • ReimerandRuby

I just let him choose what he wants for lunch especially in school as he’s eating proper variety of food in dinner time anyway. Sometimes we just have to let them have what they enjoy, nothing wrong with that. Thanks!
